Behind every program, project, and possibility at the Galesburg Public Library is a generous and passionate community of supporters. In this new series, Foundation Faces, we’re proud to highlight the individuals who help bring our mission to life. From lifelong library lovers to first-time donors, each story reflects the spirit of generosity and belief in the power of libraries to transform lives. Join us as we celebrate the people who make our work possible—one story at a time.
Our first spotlight features Ron Hunt, a lifelong learner, artist, and steadfast supporter of the library. From teaching poetry and watercolor to working part-time at the Galesburg Public Library in retirement, Ron’s story is one of creativity, curiosity, and quiet impact.
Celebrating Creativity, Community, and Lifelong Learning: Meet Ron Hunt
At the Galesburg Public Library Foundation, we believe that stories shape communities, and few people embody that belief better than Ron Hunt.
Ron has spent his life surrounded by books, creativity, and curiosity. Now 73, his journey began with owning a bookstore in the 1980s before joining Carl Sandburg College, where he worked for 25 years, primarily in the library. His impact went far beyond the shelves—he also taught Creative Writing, Intro to Poetry, and Intro to Watercolors, encouraging others to explore their creative voices.
A lifelong learner himself, Ron took full advantage of the opportunities available at Sandburg, enrolling in free watercolor classes offered to employees. What began as a beginner’s course soon became a passion. After the retirement of his instructor, Molly Karjala, Ron stepped in to teach the class. Like many great teachers, he’ll tell you he learned as much from his students as they did from him.
Even in retirement, Ron’s love for libraries remained strong. He worked part-time at the Galesburg Public Library and continues to support the library and the Foundation as a donor and advocate. His commitment to education, creativity, and access to resources reflects the very heart of our mission to strengthen the library through community generosity.
Ron’s appreciation for the natural world also shines through in his art. Growing up on a farm instilled in him a deep respect for nature that continues to inspire him today. As a longtime board member of the Western Illinois Nature Group, Ron draws from the beauty of Blackthorn Hill, turning moments in nature into vibrant watercolor paintings. His artwork is a celebration of beauty, reflection, and the world around us.
We are proud to celebrate Ron’s story and grateful for his continued support of the Galesburg Public Library Foundation.
