Bookmarked: Evan Massey — Preserving the Stories That Built Galesburg

Evan Massey

For most of his career, Evan Massey spent his time looking forward.

As a teacher and coach, his focus was on helping students grow, preparing for the next game, and building for the future. Retirement, however, opened the door to something unexpected: looking back.

Today, many people know Evan through the historical articles and community stories he shares online and through local media. What began as a personal interest has become a way of helping preserve pieces of Galesburg's history that might otherwise be forgotten.

And much of that journey begins inside the Galesburg Public Library.

Following the Trail of a Story

Evan's research often starts with a simple question.

Sometimes it's a basketball team from decades ago. Sometimes it's a community leader whose name appears in an old newspaper article. Sometimes it's a family keepsake that sparks curiosity about a moment in time.

What happens next is rarely predictable.

“It’s fun kind of stumbling onto some of those things.”

As he works through yearbooks, newspapers, and archival materials, one discovery often leads to another.

"I'm finding things that I'm interested in," Evan said. "I'm doing what I want to do."

That curiosity has taken him far beyond the basketball history he originally set out to explore.

Along the way, he has uncovered stories about educators, community leaders, schools, local traditions, and the people whose lives helped shape Galesburg into the community it is today.

Discovering More Than History

One of Evan's favorite resources is the library's archives.

For many visitors, the archive area remains one of the library's hidden treasures. For Evan, it has become a place of discovery.

There, he spends hours working through decades of local newspapers preserved on microfilm, searching for details that connect the past to the present.

Sometimes the stories are remarkable.

A search for one topic might uncover another entirely. A forgotten newspaper article can reveal a community leader whose impact deserves to be remembered. A photograph or obituary can fill in missing pieces of a story that has been lost over time.

"It's kind of neat," he said, reflecting on the process of exploring those historical records.

More than once, a project has led him down an entirely unexpected path, uncovering stories he never intended to find but couldn't wait to share.

Why These Stories Matter

As Evan talks about local history, it becomes clear that his interest isn't really about dates or statistics.

It's about people.

It's about remembering the teacher who changed lives, the community member who quietly made a difference, or the family whose story became part of Galesburg's larger story.

The deeper he digs into history, the more he appreciates how easily those stories can disappear.

Like many people, Evan wishes there were questions he could still ask family members who are no longer here. Their experiences, memories, and perspectives become more valuable with time.

Historical records cannot replace those conversations, but they can preserve pieces of them.

In many ways, that's what keeps Evan coming back.

Not simply to research the past, but to better understand the people who lived it.

Keeping Community Memory Alive

Every community has stories worth remembering.

Some are well known. Others exist only in old newspapers, fading photographs, yearbooks, and family memories.

The Galesburg Public Library serves as a steward of those stories, preserving resources that allow future generations to learn about the people and events that shaped their hometown.

For Evan, those resources have become an invaluable tool, not only for his writing, but for his connection to the community itself.

Through every article, every discovery, and every hour spent in the archives, he helps ensure that Galesburg's stories continue to be told.

Because the stories that built a community are worth preserving.

And the people who uncover them help keep them alive.
