If you spend any time at the Galesburg Public Library, chances are good you’ve met April. Known affectionately by some as the “library mom,” April brings a warm smile, a generous spirit, and a deep love for books to everything she does—whether she’s attending a book club, chatting with fellow patrons, or folding newsletters as a volunteer.
April’s relationship with the library spans decades, beginning when she and her daughter, Payton, were regulars at the old East Simmons Street building. “We loved it there,” she says. “It was one of the first places we always visited when we came to Galesburg. I can’t say enough good about it.” Over the years, the library has remained a constant in April’s life—a second home where she finds connection, conversation, and community.
Since retiring from a career that included roles at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg School District, and Warren Achievement, April has found new ways to stay active and engaged. She regularly volunteers at the library, doing everything from helping process donated books to newsletter folding—her favorite task because of the company it brings. “Everybody visits, and it’s just a cozy, fun time,” she says.
April’s also been involved in unique behind-the-scenes tasks like recycling worn-out books and even making popcorn for library movie nights. “There’s always something going on, and always good people to be around,” she says.
As a patron, April takes full advantage of what the library offers. She’s a member of several book clubs—often reading titles she wouldn’t have chosen on her own. “Some books have completely surprised me,” she says, referencing The World in a Grain, a deep dive into the significance of sand. “It opened my eyes to something I never would have picked up otherwise.”
She’s also a fan of the Libby app, especially during Illinois’ extreme seasons. “If it’s too hot or too cold, I just check Libby,” she laughs. Audiobooks have become a new favorite too—perfect for passing the time while doing chores or relaxing at home. “It’s like I’m still reading my book, even when I’m folding laundry.”
April’s passion for libraries goes beyond Galesburg. She loves visiting other libraries on road trips. “Wherever we go, I always ask, ‘Can we stop at the local library?’” she says.
But nothing quite compares to the Galesburg Public Library. April especially appreciates the new building’s community room and book club space. “The community needs to know just how much this library has to offer,” she says. “There are so many people who still haven’t been here, and I can’t imagine not coming.”
For April, the library is more than a building. It’s a source of friendships, learning, and purpose. “Thanks to the library, I’ve met some of the most interesting and good people I’ve ever known,” she says. “It really is one of the greatest escapes there is.”
If you see April around the library—whether folding newsletters, picking up a book, or just enjoying a conversation—be sure to say hello. You’ll be glad you did.
